A Message from our Founders

When we started Three Ships in 2017, we were frustrated with the state of the beauty industry. Overpriced products, green-washing and millions of tons of plastic waste. We knew there had to be a better way, so we set out on a mission to provide the most effective, transparent and affordable natural skincare.

The skincare industry is in need of an overhaul and we believe that better skincare means being better in every way - from protecting and restoring the planet to supporting the community. We're determined to use our business as a force for good and believe that our sustainability work today is just the start.

We hope you'll join us in demanding better from the skincare industry.

Our
Sustainability
Action Plan

Embracing the Circular Economy

We believe that businesses have a role in reducing waste and protecting the planet. Our team embraces circularity principles and has audited all existing products to identify ways to eliminate unnecessary packaging. We've opted to minimize waste by using glass bottles, a material that can be recycled endlessly, for all our serums, cleansers, and masks. A small portion of our products use plastic components, such as our pumps and droppers, which are not recyclable as yet. However, we are working closely with our suppliers for a solution. We are committed to minimizing plastic usage and shifting to 100% of plastic packaging designed to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025, in line with the Canada Plastics Pact commitments.

Responsible Sourcing

We believe that sourcing transparency provides you with the opportunity to look closer to better understand what’s going on your skin. We also know that natural isn't always better for the environment or community. Natural ingredients need to be sourced in a responsible manner for people and the planet. That's why we've implemented a rigorous supplier auditing process, where all suppliers adhere to a code of conduct, including environmental protection and upholding worker rights in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Labour Organization’s Conventions.

Combating Climate Change

Every business has a carbon footprint, but we believe that every business should be working to reduce carbon emissions and offset previous emissions. We also believe that climate protection happens throughout the value chain, from sourcing sustainably to protecting natural habitats to manufacturing using clean energy. We are committed to becoming a climate-neutral business.

Supporting the Community

Compassion guides all aspects of our business, and it is our goal to support charities, environmental initiatives and promote diversity within our brand. Our partnership with Make-A-Wish Canada means we have the privilege of granting wishes for children with critical illnesses and help keep their spirits high during this difficult time. At checkout, customers can add a donation to their order. 100% of these proceeds go directly to Make-A-Wish. We will also be launching limited-time products where 100% of the proceeds go towards Make-A-Wish.

Why is the Circular Economy Cycle important for Three Ships?

We recognize the environmental impacts of the beauty industry and as we continue to grow, it is our goal to minimize waste and increase sustainability in all aspects of our supply chain. This model is regenerative by intention; we use ingredients and design products that can be renewed and recycled at the end of it’s cycle.

Pact Mail-Back Collection Program

Three Ships Beauty is a proud member of Pact, a nonprofit membership organization that collects hard-to-recycle beauty products such as pumps and serum droppers.

A small portion of our products use plastic components that are not accepted by municipal recycling programs. Through Pact's Mail-Back collection Program, Three Ships customers can ship their empty Three Ships products to Pact or drop off their empties at a retail location.

Pact sorts through the hard-to-recycle packages by material type with the aim to find the highest and best use for all materials. Ideally, Pact will sell some of the material back to beauty packaging manufacturers to fulfill the circular economy.

It is our goal to optimize our packaging end-of-life and Three Ships is consistently looking for ways to increase circularity within the beauty industry.

Clean Ingredients

The term natural isn't currently regulated in the skincare industry in Canada. We believe that natural ingredients shouldn't come with "air quotes", asterisks, or lofty claims. We prioritize using ingredients that are have third-party certifications, such as COSMOS ECOCERT, a leading standard for organic and natural products. All suppliers adhere to our code of conduct and we also use fair trade almond ingredients as well as RSPO-certified palm oil derivatives.

Upcycled

Bark Extract

Our Bark Extract is upcycled from the biomass by-products of the lumber industry in Quebec, Canada.

The bioactive molecules in the tree’s bark are obtained through a circular economy cycle, where leftover bark is recycled into compost and returned to the forest as fertilizer.

Upcycled

Pentylene Glycol

Our Pentylene Glycol is upcycled and naturally derived from sugarcane bagasse, the fibrous remains from the sugarcane juice extraction process.

This ingredient is a USDA-certified biobased product and the biomass remains are used as fuel to sustain its own energy, meaning that this process uses 100% renewable carbon.

Upcycled

Grape Cell Extract

Our Fruit Cell Extract is upcycled from the Gamay Teinturier Fréaux grape which contains high levels of tannins.

The grapes’ thick skin and bitter taste make it undesirable for winemaking but contain powerful antioxidants that are perfect for formulation.

Upcycled

Squalane

Our squalane is upcycled from sustainable and 100% renewable sugarcane that is a USDA Certified Biobased Product.

This ingredient contributes to a circular economy as the biomass remains are used as fuel to sustain its own energy consumption. This meets a 60% reduction in greenhouse gases compared to petrochemical processes.

Upcycled

Biolin

Our blend of sugars (biolin) is upcycled from the root of the chicory plant.

This part of the plant is often discarded once the leaves are removed. Chicory fields surround the factory to reduce carbon emissions, and the waste from the factory is used as natural fertilizer or animal feed to fulfill the circular economy cycle.
