Natural, clean, sustainable…what does it all actually mean?

Natural Beauty:

At Three Ships, in order for a product to be considered natural it must be made exclusively of natural ingredients. Natural ingredients are those that come directly from natural sources (specifically plants, minerals and microbes), excluding petroleum and fossil-fuel derived ingredients.

These natural ingredients may have been chemically processed or refined, and examples of acceptable processes are esterification, fermentation, saponification and distillation.

Clean Beauty:

Clean Beauty is the concept of creating cosmetics that do not contain certain ingredients of concern. There’s no one “list” of these restricted ingredients, but generally clean brands avoid the use of things like parabens, sulfates, phthalates and others. Each brand and retailer sets their own standards of what “clean” means to them. In general, natural brands are considered clean, but clean brands are not natural by default.

Sustainable Beauty:

Creating and using beauty products in ways that minimize environmental impact and promote social responsibility. This includes using ethically sourced ingredients, eco-friendly packaging, energy-efficient production, and reducing waste in supply chains. Sustainable Beauty doesn’t necessarily mean that the formulas are either clean or natural.
