Sustainability

Better for the planet.
Better for your skin.

From the Founders

When we started Three Ships in 2017, we were frustrated with the state of the beauty industry. Overpriced products, green-washing and millions of tons of plastic waste. We knew there had to be a better way, so we set out on a mission to provide the most effective, transparent and affordable natural skincare.

The skincare industry is in need of an overhaul and we believe that better skincare means being better in every way - from protecting and restoring the planet to supporting the community. We're determined to use our business as a force for good and believe that our sustainability work today is just the start.

We hope you'll join us in demanding better from the skincare industry.

Our Sustainability Action Plan

2017-2020

Manufacture All Products In Canada

Keeping all of our manufacturing in Canada helped us reduce our carbon footprint.

We also begin formulating with upcycled ingredients.

2021

Implement the Supplier Code of Conduct

Ensure all suppliers sign our Supplier Code of Conduct to maintain ethical and sustainable sourcing practices.

We also launch our partnership with Make a Wish Canada.

2022

Increase Our Recycling Initiatives

Ensure 100% of plastic components are a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled plastic.

By this year, we will offer refillable product alternatives and become Climate Neutral Certified.

2023

Maintain Carbon Neutrality

Implement a greenhouse gas reduction plan and use Forest Stewardship Certified paper for 100% of paper products.

Conduct official product life cycle assessments for all products.

2024

Grant More Wishes Through Make-A-Wish

Embracing the Circular Economy

We believe that businesses have a role in reducing waste and protecting the planet. Our team embraces circularity principles and has audited all existing products to identify ways to eliminate unnecessary packaging. A circular economy aims to increase supply chain efficiency and sustainability by reducing waste through its regenerative process.

Its Importance To Us

We recognize the environmental impacts of the beauty industry and as we continue to grow, it is our goal to minimize waste and increase sustainability in all aspects of our supply chain.

Upcycled Ingredients

This model is regenerative by intention; we use ingredients and design products that can be renewed and recycled at the end of it’s cycle.

Responsible Sourcing

We believe that sourcing transparency provides you with the opportunity to look closer to better understand what’s going on your skin. We also know that natural isn't always better for the environment or community. Natural ingredients need to be sourced in a responsible manner for people and the planet. That's why we've implemented a rigorous supplier auditing process, where all suppliers adhere to a code of conduct, including environmental protection and upholding worker rights in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Labour Organization’s Conventions.

Business Conduct

All of our suppliers adhere to a strict code of conduct including legal compliance, conflicts of interest, transparency, and responsible product development.

Inclusive Workplaces

All of our suppliers are audited by a 3rd party for child labour practices, fair labour standards, and health and safety protection.

Environmental Protection

Our suppliers are committed to recording and disclosing environmental impact, respecting land rights, and minimizing waste.

Combating Climate Change

Every business has a carbon footprint, but we believe that every business should be working to reduce carbon emissions and offset previous emissions. We also believe that climate protection happens throughout the value chain, from sourcing sustainably to protecting natural habitats to manufacturing using clean energy. We are committed to becoming a climate-neutral business.

1. Measure

First we will measure our 2021 carbon emissions using the BEE tool.

2. Offset

Offset the entire thing by supporting projects that avoid carbon emissions or remove carbon from the atmosphere.

3. Reduce

Once we complete offsetting, we will work with Climate Neutral to identify areas to cut our own emissions.

Supporting the Community

Compassion guides all aspects of our business, and it is our goal to support charities, environmental initiatives and promote diversity within our brand. Our partnership with Make-A-Wish Canada means we have the privilege of granting wishes for children with critical illnesses and help keep their spirits high during this difficult time. At checkout, customers can add a donation to their order. 100% of these proceeds go directly to Make-A-Wish. We will also be launching limited-time products where 100% of the proceeds go towards Make-A-Wish.

120 Billion

beauty packages are made each year--most of them from virgin plastic, and most of them ending up in the landfill.

This is how Three Ships Beauty is addressing the issue.

Committed To

Sustainable Packaging

We are committed to minimizing plastic usage and shifting to 100% of plastic packaging designed to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025, in line with the Canada Plastics Pact commitments.

We've opted to minimize waste by using glass bottles, a material that can be recycled endlessly, for the majority of our products.

Pact Mail-Back Collection Program

Three Ships Beauty is a proud member of Pact, a nonprofit membership organization that collects hard-to-recycle beauty products such as pumps and serum droppers. A small portion of our products use plastic components that are not accepted by municipal recycling programs. Through Pact's Mail-Back collection Program, Three Ships customers can ship their empty Three Ships products to Pact or drop off their empties at a retail location. Pact sorts through the hard-to-recycle packages by material type with the aim to find the highest and best use for all materials. Ideally, Pact will sell some of the material back to beauty packaging manufacturers to fulfill the circular economy.

It is our goal to optimize our packaging end-of-life and Three Ships is consistently looking for ways to increase circularity within the beauty industry.

Upcycled Beauty

Upcycled beauty reduces waste by sourcing parts of produce that would often contribute to food waste. We see value in discarded raw materials and strive to find methods of upcycling these ingredients for formulation. Swipe to learn more about our upcycled ingredients.

Upcycled

Bark Extract

Our Bark Extract is upcycled from the biomass by-products of the lumber industry in Quebec, Canada.

The bioactive molecules in the tree’s bark are obtained through a circular economy cycle, where leftover bark is recycled into compost and returned to the forest as fertilizer.

Upcycled

Pentylene Glycol

Our Pentylene Glycol is upcycled and naturally derived from sugarcane bagasse, the fibrous remains from the sugarcane juice extraction process.

This ingredient is a USDA-certified biobased product and the biomass remains are used as fuel to sustain its own energy, meaning that this process uses 100% renewable carbon.

Upcycled

Grape Cell Extract

Our Fruit Cell Extract is upcycled from the Gamay Teinturier Fréaux grape which contains high levels of tannins.

The grapes’ thick skin and bitter taste make it undesirable for winemaking but contain powerful antioxidants that are perfect for formulation.

Upcycled

Squalane

Our squalane is upcycled from sustainable and 100% renewable sugarcane that is a USDA Certified Biobased Product.

This ingredient contributes to a circular economy as the biomass remains are used as fuel to sustain its own energy consumption. This meets a 60% reduction in greenhouse gases compared to petrochemical processes.

Upcycled

Biolin

Our blend of sugars (biolin) is upcycled from the root of the chicory plant.

This part of the plant is often discarded once the leaves are removed. Chicory fields surround the factory to reduce carbon emissions, and the waste from the factory is used as natural fertilizer or animal feed to fulfill the circular economy cycle.
