Our Commitment to Responsible AI Use

At Three Ships, we believe in using technology thoughtfully and transparently. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that’s reshaping many industries—including beauty. But with that power comes real concerns, especially when it comes to trust, truthfulness, and the role of humans in a rapidly changing world.

From deepfakes to overly retouched photos and synthetic influencers, AI can make it harder to know what’s real—and who to believe. That’s why we’re making this policy public. As a brand founded on transparency and evidence-based natural skincare, we want you to know exactly how (and how not) we use AI at Three Ships.

How We Use AI at Three Ships

We use AI as a supportive tool to help us work faster, think creatively, and stay nimble. Here’s how we integrate it responsibly into our workflows:

  • Drafting copy: We occasionally use AI to generate first drafts of written content—like product descriptions, campaign headlines, or email subject lines. Everything that goes live is reviewed, rewritten, and approved by a human to ensure it reflects our tone, values, and accuracy.

  • Campaign ideation: AI helps us explore creative directions and generate brainstorm ideas for things like product names or campaign themes. It’s a helpful jumpstart—not the final decision-maker.
Generating placeholder or product images: We may use AI to create stylized still images of products for use in early design mockups, placeholder visuals, or even live ads. These are used only for still-life product imagery—not images of people—and are always reviewed and approved by our team before publishing.

  • Design mockups for printed materials: We use AI to generate early-stage visual concepts for things like trade show booths or signage. For example, if a team member has an idea for a booth layout, they might use AI to mock it up and share with the design team to help kickstart the creative process. These mockups serve as rough inspiration and are always refined and finalized by our in-house design team.

What We Will Never Use AI For

While we see value in AI as a tool, we have clear boundaries around where it doesn't belong. These are the ways we don’t and won’t use AI:

  • Retouching or enhancing before-and-after photos. We don’t believe in misleading transformations. Every before-and-after photo we share is real—unfiltered, unretouched, and submitted by real customers.

  • Generating images or videos of people. All humans featured in our content—from ads to product pages—are real people. We do not use AI-generated models, influencers, or customer stand-ins.

  • Replacing our team. AI won’t take the place of the humans behind Three Ships. We use it to support our people, not substitute them. The creativity, care, and intuition of our team are irreplaceable.

  • Making hiring decisions. While we may use AI to help screen resumes or streamline administrative tasks in the hiring process, all decisions about who joins our team are made by people. We do not use AI to rank, score, or eliminate candidates without human involvement.

  • Evaluating employee performance. We will never use AI to monitor or assess employee productivity, performance, or behavior. Performance feedback at Three Ships is grounded in human relationships, context, and ongoing dialogue—not algorithmic scoring.

  • Approving new products or formulations. Our product development process is built on rigorous research, testing, and customer feedback. AI may help us analyze trends or structure ideas, but it will never replace the expertise of our chemists, team, or partners when it comes to creating safe, effective skincare.

  • Automating sensitive customer support. You’ll never get a fully AI-generated response when writing in about personal or complex skin concerns. While we may use tools to help summarize or organize messages, a real person handles every skincare-related reply.

A Final Word

AI presents both opportunity and risk. It can boost productivity, spark ideas, and free up time for deeper human connection. But it can also make it easier to mislead, cut corners, or lose sight of what matters.

At Three Ships, we believe beauty should be honest. And that means being clear with you about what’s real, who’s behind our brand, and how we choose to use the tools available to us to help our customers navigate natural with confidence.

We’ll continue to update this policy as AI evolves—but one thing won’t change: our commitment to transparency, accountability, and putting people first.

Sincerely,

Laura + Connie, Co-Founders
