Three Ships #HerHustle Interview with Beverley Cheng, Founder of Born To Sweat - Three Ships

Beverley, the founder of Born to Sweat, is also a blogger, a model, and a personal trainer. After working full time at an insurance company, she quit her job and became a full-time self employed boss. We asked about her lifestyle and advices for fellow female leaders out there. Let’s get started!

What’s your morning routine?
On Mondays and Tuesdays I try to wake up early around 7:30AM and go for a 20 minute walk, and then I’ll come back home, have a coffee and get started on emails/blog that I have to get done for that day. Then I’ll usually go to the gym from 10-10:30AM to work out. On Wednesdays and Fridays I usually teach classes from 8AM, and work out afterward.

We really appreciate how you focus on living a balanced lifestyle. What inspired you to get into healthy living?
I’ve always really been into sports since I was young and have been really active, but once I graduated from university I took a step away from sports and got more into working out and health/wellness. I've been fortunate in that I’ve always had coaches and people showing me how to eat healthy, and my parents have always been eating really healthy, so it’s kind of innate for me. Then it all came down to putting that all to social media and my blog.

"Entrepreneurship and being self-employed seems
like a really sexy and fun job, but there’s so
much more to it that you don’t really realize."

I heard you left your previous full-time job last year to focus on Born to Sweat. What advice do you have for boss babes thinking of taking a leap and starting their own business?
You definitely need to make sure that all your ducks are in a row. For me, it wasn’t just a question of me quitting my job, it was a question of me making sure I had enough money to pay my mortgage and my bills for at least three months. Worst case scenario if I didn’t make it, would I still be able to pay for what I needed to pay? Entrepreneurship and being self-employed seems like a really sexy and fun job, but there’s so much more to it that you don’t really realize. So make sure you know exactly what you are getting into, for example, when you quit your job, you’re not going to have benefits or a pension. You have to make sure you cover all your basics before you take that leap. But once you’ve done that and if you believe you really can do it, and if you’re sure you want to that for the rest of your life, then anyone can do it.

It’s also hard to say if opening a business in Toronto is hard because it hugely depends on the industry. The industry I’m in is extremely saturated, so it’s difficult, but Toronto has a large entrepreneur community here, more than any other cities in Canada. It’s a double edged sword - there’s so many people here that it’s saturated, but since there's so many people here there’s more opportunity.

What advice would you give to your 18 year old self?
Keep doing the same thing and not worry about the path I’m on, everything is going to work out the way it’s supposed to, as long as I keep my head on straight and keep pushing.

From your Instagram, blog and YouTube channel, you just seem to radiate positive energy! Do you have a favourite mantra for when you’re feeling down, or to motivate you to keep pushing?
Not really, no mantra haha. Born to Sweat is my job now, and if I don’t push hard every single day or work to beat my best then that’s my own business and my own brand that’s going to go down the toilet. So everything that I do, I do because I want my brand to survive, and be successful.

What's one skincare product you can't live without?
Definitely face moisturizer! Lately I've been using Biotherm but I also love Kiehl's.
